The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is here to help Australians living with disabilities by providing funding for essential services and products. One such service that can be extremely beneficial for NDIS participants is Short Term Accommodation (STA), or respite.
What is Short Term Accommodation?
Short Term Accommodation (STA) offers temporary support and accommodation for NDIS participants who need a break from their usual living arrangements. It can be funded for stays of up to 14 days at a time.
STA is often used when your regular carers or support networks are unavailable, or when you want to try something new in a safe environment. Your stay could involve being with other people or alone, depending on your needs and goals. STA provides several benefits, including:
Short Breaks: A chance to experience new environments and activities with the support you need.
Crisis Support: If unforeseen circumstances or emergencies arise, STA offers critical respite to help both you and your carers.
Social Opportunities: Meet new people, build relationships, and develop social skills in a supported setting.
What’s Included in STA Funding?
The NDIS Short Term Accommodation funding doesn’t just cover accommodation. It may also fund essential services, including:
Personal care products and services
Accommodation itself
Food and drinks
Activities that help you meet your goals and needs
STA funding is designed to provide both you and your carers with a much-needed break in a supportive environment.
NDIS Respite & Short Term Accommodation Guidelines
For your NDIS Short Term Accommodation funding to be approved, it must meet the following guidelines:
Disability-related: The accommodation must be linked to your disability.
Goal-oriented: It must help you work toward your goals.
Community participation: It should encourage you to take part in community activities.
Value for money: The funding should be used in the most efficient and beneficial way.
Benefits of Short Term Accommodation and Respite
There are many reasons why STA and respite can benefit NDIS participants:
Improved Well-Being: STA offers respite for both participants and carers. Carers get a break, and participants continue to receive support in a new setting.
Increased Independence: Trying new things in new environments can help build skills and confidence.
Social Inclusion: STA often encourages socializing and reduces isolation, fostering connections with others.
Maintaining Living Situations: Time away from home can help maintain your usual living arrangements by giving informal carers a break.
Does the NDIS Cover Holidays?
It’s important to note that STA is not intended for holidays. The NDIS does not fund travel-related expenses, such as cruises, holiday packages, accommodation for leisure purposes, airfares, or activities and meals included in travel.
If you’re unsure whether your planned STA is eligible for funding, reach out to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) or your support team to discuss your individual needs.

What Do the October 2024 NDIS Legislation Changes Mean for STA Funding?
As of October 3rd, 2024, there have been significant changes to the NDIS rules, and STA and Respite are among the supports affected.
The key change is that the NDIA has clarified that participants living alone or in Supported Independent Living (SIL) arrangements are no longer eligible for STA funding. This is because participants in these situations already have time away from family and informal supports.
If you think this change may affect you, speak directly with the NDIA or your planner to discuss your eligibility and seek approval for STA under the new guidelines.
